  Three Seasons of Fishing Fun
at Pleasant View, on
Beautiful Black Lake

Spring(May 1 to June 18) After a long, cold winter, the anticipation of getting your line wet is too much to bear. Adults feel a childlike excitement for their first fishing trip of the year. At no time during the season are more fish caught. Early Spring is the preferred time of the year for bullhead fishing, and local bullhead dinners are a big event. Catfish up to 15 pounds are frequent, and have been caught up to 25 pounds. Crappie fishing is at it's best, and you could win cash and prizes by entering the Black Lake Tagged Crappie Marathon. For the inexperienced crappie fisherman, the easiest way is baiting your hook with a crappie minnow on a bobber. Or try using any of the numerous types of jigs in various colors. Boy, is it fun to land a Northern Pike Earls big Pikeon your light tackle while fishing for crappie. You can also catch more panfish than will ever fit in your boat, including blue gills, perch, and sunfish. Right from opening day, more Northern Pike are caught than at any other time of the year. What else could be more fun than sitting in a bay with large shiners and bobbers relaxing the day away and catching a big Northern. Try using in line spinners, such as Blue Fox or Mepps #3 and #4, early in May. Later in the season, as the bait fish grow, switch to larger lures such as spinnerbaits, Johnson silver spoons, or Daredevils. Walleye fishing in Black Lake has gotten much better thanks to the excellent efforts of the Black Lake Fish & Game Club and the NYS DEC stocking programs.
Summer (June 19 - Aug 28) Oh Yeah! You can finally fish for those big ole Bass. Throughout the decades, Black Lake has been ranked as a top Bass lake in the Country. A few years ago, a 15" limit was put into effect, and so far it seems to be successful. Last year, fisherman went crazy
catching dozens of 14 7/8" bass, so look out in 1999. Those fish have all grown up! Last year, flipping plastic worms and pig-n-jigs into 4' to 6' weed edges and pockets, produced more 3 to 5 pound bass than all the years we have owned Pleasant View. The last two hours of the evening, when most fishermen have gone in for dinner, is the best time to get all those top water lures out of your tackle box. The shock of having a bass smack your top water lure can truly be one of the best parts of fishing. And if a Northern thrashes up through the weeds, look out! Crappie, panfish, walleye, and catfish can still be caught all year long. You might even land the granddaddy of them all, a big Muskie.
Fall (Aug 28 to Late Oct) The weather is terrific, and the view of foliage from the banks of Pleasant View, and elsewhere on the Lake, is hard to beat. And yes, this is when the BIG fish are landed. Your favorite fish have grown all summer, and are bulking up for Winter; everything from panfish to gamefish is really active. Most people come for Crappies or Pike, but the big secret I have learned over the last few years: Smallmouth Bass! More smallies are caught in an hour during this time of year than are caught in a day at other times of the year. Fishing the points of the islands, the drop-offs, and the rocky shoals can produce endless fun. In late September and October, on most days, you could be the only boat on the lake. When others switch to hunting, they have given up the best fishing of the season. You may have to wear long johns, but it's worth it.
Black Lake fishing will be hard to beat, but even if you don't catch a single fish, just being on the water is a great way to spend your day. Although we all enjoy a fish fry now and then, please help us maintain the quality of fishing for future generations by putting a few back now and then.
When is the best time to come to Pleasant View? "Some say spring, some say summer, some say fall. We say the best time is when you can come."
